Meet HOT HULA fitness® Instructor
Roe Sang

My love affair with fitness started in January of 2010. I had just moved back to CA and was itching to get back in shape. I knew I needed to be in a dynamic group session in order to keep me motivated so I decided to attend group exercise classes daily. The only class that worked for my schedule on Thursdays was this class called “Hot Hula” . I came to the class thinking it was a hula-hoop class and boy was I surprised.

 

Anna Rita yelling tamau, ami, afata and varu scared the hell out of me but I was hooked! I walked in the class thinking I was coordinated and walked out completely discombobulated. Determined and in love with the format, I went to as much classes as I can. A year later I decided to get certified and here I am today, an instructor and loving every minute of it.

 

My body changed but the biggest change for me was my confidence. I have also met so many amazing people through Hot Hula. Not only did I gain the fitness benefit from it but I also gained an extended family.

 

My journey with fitness may have begun in 2010 but I don’t believe it will ever end. Not because I have more weight to loose but because I’ve made a decision to be healthy for the rest of my life. The hardest thing is to take the first step, the rest is easy so come and join me in this wonderful and never-ending journey.

My name is Alisha and I am a 34 year old mother of two, a wife, and a teacher. I have struggled with my weight my entire life and have done yo-yo dieting for as long as I can remember!

My real weight issues started after having my kids. I was at my heaviest in 2009 at 235 lbs. I couldn't believe I had allowed myself to get to that point, but I didn't know what I was going to do about it. All of the women in my family are large and suffer from many different weight related health issues. I just came to a point where I figured this was my destiny. I had better just enjoy my life, get used to the fact that I am a "big girl" and try to be happy with that.

Then a friend told me about HOT HULA fitness®. Being involved with Polynesian dancing since I was 6 years old, I have a great passion for this type of dancing as well as the culture, so I was extremely interested. I did some research and talked to a friend that was involved in fitness. With her encouragement I attended an instructor training for HOT HULA fitness®. I didn't attend with the intention of ever instructing, I just wanted to see what all the hype was about and since it involved the dancing I loved so much it seemed like it might be a good fit for me.

Once that training began...I was hooked! I loved it and wanted to get involved in classes right away, but then I got the opportunity to talk with Anna-Rita Sloss, the trainer that day. She told me that she wanted me to consider being an instructor. I laughed inside thinking, "What gym would ever hire someone like ME to teach fitness?" I took that training in January 2010 and by May 2010 I was instructing my first class. Right before I started that first class I figured I better get myself in check and do this the right way. I needed to change my eating habits for good this time and make it realistic. That's exactly what I did and within the first 5 months I was down 25 lbs!

It has now been almost a year of instructing for me...I instruct 2 HOT HULA fitness® classes a week, attend other HOT HULA fitness® classes when I have the time, and I am now getting close to being down 40 lbs! I have never been happier about my health and my body. HOT HULA fitness® has changed me. It has not only made outside physical changes to my body, but it has changed me inside as well. It has given me a confidence I have never known and brought me into a "family" of amazing, beautiful, and encouraging people. I have been blessed to be a part of it all! Never in a million years would I have ever thought I would be a fitness instructor of any kind.

Not only did I become an instructor of HOT HULA fitness®, but I was privileged to be a part of making some of the instructor DVD's and ultimately the first HOT HULA fitness® in-home DVD series. It has taken hard work on my part to get to where I am today, but HOT HULA fitness® sure has made it fun getting here!

To Anna-Rita...you were an inspiration to me before I ever had the privilege of meeting you. Now knowing you has just made my respect, love and admiration for you grow beyond measure! Thank you for investing your time in me, always encouraging me to do more, and making me feel like I am worth it all! To my HOT HULA fitness® Ohana...thank you for your love, support, and encouragement. You are all amazing! HOT HULA fitness® has changed me for good!

A year ago, I found myself at rock bottom. Living in a new place away from family, I fell into a deep depression. It was a slow progression that I didn't even see coming, until one day I realized I could barely breathe. As a mother of six, I had dedicated my life to taking care of everyone around me, at my own expense. My life revolved around getting everyone to their activities, doing what I could to make sure they were successful and I would just sit on the sidelines and watch. I stopped participating in life. I was the mom in the lawn chair who would watch as her husband ran around and played with the kids. At nearly 200 lbs, I no longer recognized myself in the mirror.

Now, I know when I tell people I have six kids, they assume that's where I got my excess weight from. I can assure you it's not. I earned every single pound on my own, with out the help of my pregnancies. In fact, because I so often had gestational diabetes, I would be very healthy during my pregnancies, and would gain very little weight at all. However, once the baby was born, I quickly would go back to my ways and eat any thing and everything. It was to the point where I would get pregnant again, my doctor would point out that I now already weighed several pounds more than when I was full term with my previous pregnancy. I put on every pound myself, fair and square.

I decided to take the kids back home to Hawaii on a vacation. While there, I thought I'd like to try a few fitness classes. I took a few dance fitness classes, and while I felt great while dancing, when I looked in the mirror, I was shocked at how I looked. I wasn't nearly as cute as I thought I was when I danced. I quickly became the girl in the back row, hiding from my own reflection. A friend invited me to a HOT HULA fitness® class. Having danced hula in my younger days, I thought it would be fun! My first thought about 3 minutes into the class was how low impact it was. Having a bad knee, this was a bonus for me, but I couldn't imagine how something so low impact could produce results. At about 4 minutes in, when my thighs started burning and the sweat began to drip, there was no doubt in my mind that I would see results with this program. My favorite moment of that class was when I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror. My big, child bearing hips, while awkward in other classes, were graceful and beautiful while doing HOT HULA fitness®! I had always felt that once I lost the weight I would be beautiful, but in that moment, I realized that I was already beautiful, even with the weight! HOT HULA fitness® awakened me! It made me proud of my body and my curves. I learned to push myself and enjoy it.

Being so new in the fitness world, and lacking the motivation, I knew for me, the only way I would stick with the program would be to teach it. Yes, at nearly 200 lbs, I decided I wanted to be a fitness instructor! I signed up for the very next certification, which was the day after my first class. That was the single greatest decision I made in turning my life around! In less than a year with HOT HULA fitness® I dropped 50 lbs! I have found myself again. I feel like my husband has his fun, spunky wife back. For the first time in at least 10 years, I enjoy getting dressed! I'll never forget the first time I went into a store, grabbed something off the rack and it actually fit!! Shopping before usually resulted with me in tears in the dressing room. I have found that joy I'd lost. More than anything, I have found a reason to be proud of myself. I have such a different outlook on who I am and what I can accomplish. HOT HULA fitness® has been life changing not only for me, but for the men and women in my classes who have seen results in their own lives!

I want to thank Anna-Rita Sloss and ASE for creating this incredible, program. My life will forever be changed because I discovered HOT HULA fitness®.
